Body Transformation

Oct. 3.JPG

I just wanted to give massive congratulations to my client @1fashd66. He dropped 80 pounds in 6 months and is still going strong.

This tremendous physical transformation started with a mental one. He decided enough was enough. He committed himself to replacing all of his bad habits with good ones. Learned how to cook great tasting, healthy foods. And embraced the athlete lifestyle of constantly improving fitness and discipline. He eventually plans to compete in BJJ, as the lean and mean true version of himself.

At any moment, we can decide to change the trajectory of our lives. Health and fitness is the best place to start. Please contact me if your 100% ready to commit to the hunt. 🐯🦁🦅🦈  @tigerfit_1

Caged Tigers

Tigers are considered the ultimate predators on earth. The early part of their life consists of learning the skill of the hunt. And once that deadly art is mastered, nourishing their body and spirit, one prey at a time is their formula for lifelong success. Hunt. Eat. Repeat.

Humans are also natural super-hunters. For millions of years, we needed to hunt to survive. Our powerful brains developed many ways to bring down faster, stronger and more dangerous species. This quality allowed us to eventually dominate the planet.

In 2018, however, times are very different. The majestic tiger is an endangered species. And most humans eat mainly processed junk food and sit comfortably for the majority of the day. Essentially we have become caged tigers. We are all capable of extraordinary things but instead, most live routine, uninspired lives--waiting to be fed and told what to do.

To avoid this spiritual death, the solution is simple. Become the goal-seeking hunter you were designed to be. Have big, scary, difficult goals and dreams that provide purpose to your soul. They can be quick attainable goals like weight loss, performance, or material gains. Or lifelong pursuits like a world championship or new skill/ career mastery. All that matters is that you commit yourself to the hunt. Stalking, chasing and toothing and clawing your way to the best feelings in the world--accomplishment and achievement. Always be hunting!

TF Jumping Jack Warmup

This is the official TigerFit jumping jack warm-up I use for every class. It is a combination of 9 different jumping jack variations performed back to back. Each type may be performed for a 10 to 30 count of each for as many rounds as needed. It targets every muscle group of the body and fires up the heart rate. This also makes an excellent quick workout when your traveling and don't have much time and equipment to get a traditional workout in. Try 5 to 10 rounds with a 20 second rest in between. You will be sweating bullets.

  1. Traditional Jumping Jack.
  2. Reverse Jack: Move arm and legs internally.

  3. Criss Cross : Move arms and legs over and under each other.

  4. High Knee's + arms up and arms out.

  5. Side step + elbow.

  6. Lower half hip twist.

  7. High knee check + slap arms down on inside thigh.

  8. Leg kick with a quick step.

  9. Front Jacks: arms and legs in front plane (not shown).

Energy Drink Caution

Energy drinks.jpg

Confession time:

I’ve been drinking a sugar-free Rockstar or Monster almost every day for the past couple of years. I love the taste and convenience. And I love the energy boost to the mind and body. It is my guilty pleasure and as an older fighter, I can use all the help I can get. However, as an educated nutritionist I fully realize this is not optimal for long-term health. Here are some of the risks that myself and the rest of the energy drink addicts need to be aware of:

Caffeine is the main active ingredient in any energy drink. It is safe in reasonable quantities for healthy adults. But realize that heart rate and blood pressure increase with every can and increasing dosage. So, if you have heart issues, on medications, or underage, then stay away! For the rest of us, between 80 to 300 mgs per can is safe but also addictive.

Most of us eat and drink too much sugar. So, choose sugar-free whenever possible. Artificial sweeteners do carry their own risks. They can kill healthy bacteria in the gut and some links to cancer in excessive amounts. This is not ideal, but at the least, they won’t make you fatter.

Now the real issue with energy drinks is that they are loosely regulated. Which means they can throw anything in there. The stimulant enhancing; B vitamins, amino acid Taurine, herbal Guarana plant, and L-carnitine are some common ingredients. There is limited long-term research on these but generally considered safe in moderation. Any other ingredient or proprietary formula you see on a label, you should be skeptical of.

Overall, if you’re a healthy adult an occasional energy drink is no big deal. But if you find yourself drifting into the excessive zone like me, then it may be time to check yourself. A healthier alternative I’ve been using lately is: A caffeine tablet mixed with ice cold water flavored with Crystal light, Mio or G2. Less $$, tooth decay and long-term worries.

Be Relentless with your Goals

ATTITUDE and PERSISTENCE are two of the early great lessons of life. Before a baby learns to walk, they must endure many thousands of awkward steps and hundreds of painful falls. Physical and emotional stress must be ignored. Countless attempts are required with no exceptions. Eventually, after many months of temporary failures, success is achieved.

This is the success formula that many forget as we get older. It is estimated that only 3-5% of white belts will make it to black belt in most martial arts. 95% of dieters regain the weight. 60% don't renew their gym membership. And 8 out 10 new businesses fail.

Whenever you are learning a difficult new skill or endeavor, in essence, you are learning to walk again. If it is important to you, than you must find a way. Simply, be as relentless as the fed-up crawling baby you once were.

Growth through Adversity

I'm a firm believer that when you believe life has stabbed you in the back, it can be a blessing in disguise. Yes I'm talking about getting dumped, fired, an embarrassing loss in competition, or even some death's and diseases. These burning moments are inevitable in life, so how can we make them benefit us? OK, a fucked up thing happened, now what? You can cry about it. Which is therapeutic and good for quick stress relief. But as toddlers quickly realize, if there is no over attentive mom around, then it is a waste of energy. Getting intoxicated or going into party mode is an effective short distraction but often leads to more problems. And yes, like most people do, you can try to forget and bury the moment. But in my humble opinion,   this is a huge wasted opportunity.     The best option, is to USE that emotional firepower for a cause.   A positive worthy cause or goal that directly improves your life. Something that never would have happened on its own. The thing that needed a special circumstance to manifest. By redirecting your attention and full effort to accomplishing something special, something good or greater will eventually come of it. Examples: DUMPED:  Use that heartache for a fitness makeover and relentless effort to find that upgraded partner. FIRED: Use that sting to improve your skills, go back to school, start your own business. LOSS in COMPETITION:      Use the anguish to get out of your comfort zones, add skills, train harder/smarter. DISEASE:    Use the motivation to fix and heal any controllable factors. Focus on health/fitness, medical education. DEATH: Use that ultimate sorrow to honor the     surviving loved ones.     Do something ultra-special; book, service, project. Try to remember the next time something unfortunate happens to you, life has given you a powerful seed. Don't waste it. Instead, recycle your pain. Use it for emotional firepower to do the extraordinary.
